Abbey, the Lizard Hunter

...yes, this cute, little miss priss!

Before retiring to our new home in San Antonio, we lived a short while out in the country on a family ranch. Our Yorkie named Abbey who just turned seven, amazingly befriended the cattle, and she discovered that cows became her best friends. Another discovery entailed the chasing of cotton-tailed rabbits around the yard. Soon she became a ranch pet and loved it.

Since moving to San Antonio, we assumed Abbey was back to being a citified Yorkie. She appeared to forget her hunting instinct and the thrill of the chase. To our amazement she re-discovered her terrier nature. Abbey suddenly spent her time chasing squirrels as they jumped from tree to tree.

This became tedious since she never came close to catching one.

She then became fascinated with a much smaller and, in her eyes, much easier prey to stalk—lizards. Mesmerized by the miniature reptiles that scurried around the garden when she showed up, Abbey perfected her hunt.

At first, the small creatures with small heads and long bodies completely eluded Abbey. Once she observed the first green lizard that changed into a brown camouflage, she was hooked. Worst of all, the brown chameleon-like prey had the audacity to stare at her when she stalked it on the flagstone patio—only its eyelids moved. Abbey became cat-like. She crouched and slowly crept toward the lizard and stalked it.

At just the right moment, she pounced on the scurrying but helpless creepy crawler—she bit

off its tail and proudly walked back to me in triumph…with the still wiggling lizard tail hanging from her mouth. I don’t think she knew that the lizard had escaped into the grass.

Congratulations, Abbey. Your parents are proud of you! What a ferocious hunter of reptilian prey you’ve become!
