Hiding Little Treasures in Writing

...a magnificent wine...a sweet romance...a scrumptious cup of joe

..a side bit of historic intrigue?

One of my occasional diversions in writing is hiding—sometimes hinting at—little “rabbit trails” that a few of my readers seem to enjoy. Those faithful readers will tell me that—in addition to trying to solve the murder mysteries--they have also enjoyed tasting a certain wine that I mentioned or studying about a place I described in my second book, or even preparing a dish that my main character enjoyed at home. A few have even gone on to research the history of land grants in South Texas and have commented on how closely my fiction approximates historical fact.

In my present manuscript Pygmalion’s Reckoning, I allude to a certain dessert that my antagonist enjoys in a restaurant in Palma de Mallorca. Although nothing about the dessert is described, I decided to insert this tidbit for those faithful followers who enjoy doing their own research. Some readers are already familiar with it. Others will be curious because they may be fond of gourmet coffees. In fact, it is reputed to be the most expensive coffee in the world--Kopi Luwak.

Unless you’ve thoroughly researched the product, there is a significant step in the process of preparation that may cause you to skip this delicacy.

You’ve been forewarned!
